Here&#8217;s something that at least in Taiwan is far more rare: Chinese characters used to write Spanish. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2019\/11\/mi_casa_mi_kasha.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2019\/11\/mi_casa_mi_kasha-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"store sign that reads &#039;Mi Casa&#039; in large letters and &#31859;&#21345;&#33678; in Chinese characters\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2019\/11\/mi_casa_mi_kasha-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2019\/11\/mi_casa_mi_kasha-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2019\/11\/mi_casa_mi_kasha-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2019\/11\/mi_casa_mi_kasha-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 3em;\">&#31859;&#21345;&#33678;<\/div>\n<p>&#31859;&#21345;&#33678; is pronounced &#8220;M&#464; k&#462;sh&#257;&#8221;. In isolation, those characters are used in writing words associated with <em>rice <\/em>, <em>card <\/em>, <em>sha sound<\/em>, respectively &#8212; so nothing to do with &#8220;my house.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Although Mandarin does have a &#8220;sa&#8221; syllable, which is associated with various Chinese characters (e.g., &#25746;, &#20200;, &#25394;, &#28753;, &#25746;, &#38776;, &#21317;, &#39087;, &#25675;, or &#33038;), making a closer phonetic match with mi casa possible, <em>sa<\/em> was not used. As the <em>ABC Chinese&ndash;English Dictionary<\/em> notes, &#33678;\/<em>sha<\/em> is often &#8220;used in transcriptions, personal and place names,&#8221; whereas <em>sa<\/em> is not as much. <\/p>\n<p>This store, near the border between Taiwan&#8217;s aesthetic Banqiao and Zhonghe, is now closed. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I occasionally snap photos of instances of Chinese characters being used to write English (e.g., dog, butterfly, crunchy, oh my god).
