First, in <a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/004330.html\">Stop him before he tropes again<\/a>, he takes Al Gore to task for repeating the myth (<a href=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/newinstall\/2006\/the-crisis-of-what-we-know-but-just-aint-so\/\">again<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Then Zimmer posted his findings that the myth &#8220;was in use among Christian missionaries in China as early as 1938 and creeping into American public discourse by 1940.&#8221; (See <a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/004343.html\">Crisis = danger + opportunity: The plot thickens<\/a>.)
