Joel of Danwei has translated the gist of a list of the top errors in Mandarin use for 2006, as submitted by the readers of Yǎowénjiáozì<\/span> (咬文嚼字), a magazine in China. (Yǎowénjiáozì<\/span> is tricky to translate. Maybe “Pedantry,” though that sounds a bit harsh.) <\/p>\n

I’ve reproduced the errors relating specifically to character use (7 out of 10), making the characters larger in order to help make the distinctions clearer. See Joel’s post for details. <\/p>\n

  1. 象<\/span> (xiàng<\/span>) instead of 像<\/span> (xiàng<\/span>)<\/li>\n
  2. 丙戍年<\/span> (bǐng shù nián<\/span>) instead of 丙戌年<\/span> (bǐngxū nián<\/span>)<\/li>\n
  3. 神州[六号]<\/span> (Shénzhōu [liù hào]<\/span>) instead of 神舟[六号]<\/span> (Shén Zhōu [liù hào]<\/span>) (Those responsible for naming the spacecraft, however, certainly intended the name to remind people of “the Divine Land” (Shénzhōu<\/span>, 神州, i.e. China).)\n\t<\/li>\n
  4. 既<\/span> (jì<\/span>) instead of 即<\/span> (jí<\/span>)<\/li>\n
  5. 美發<\/span> (měi fā<\/span>) instead of 美髮<\/span> (měifà<\/span>) (The characters 發 (fā<\/span>) and 髮 (fà<\/span>) were both given the simplified form of 发, so people in China often end up with the wrong character when trying to use the traditional form of 发.)<\/li>\n
  6. 启示<\/span> (qǐshì<\/span>) instead of 启事<\/span> (qǐshì<\/span>) <\/li>\n
  7. 哈蜜瓜<\/span> (hā mì guā<\/span>) instead of 哈密瓜<\/span> (Hāmìguā<\/span>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
