It&#8217;s just outside the second terminal of <a href=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/2006\/chinglish-international-airport\/\">Taiwan&#8217;s main international airport<\/a> and thus is the first example of road signage that many visitors to Taiwan see.<\/p>\n<p>The atrocious typography displayed in how &#8220;Nankan&#8221; (&#21335;&#23809;\/N&#225;nk&#224;n) is written is certainly a good introduction to the <a href=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/2007\/chabuduo-jiu-keyi\/\"><em>chabuduo<\/em><\/a> world of Taiwan&#8217;s signage. <\/p>\n<p>Truly <em>n\u00e1nk\u00e0n<\/em> (ugly)! <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2011\/04\/nankan_large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2011\/04\/nankan_sign.jpg\" alt=\"a directional sign pointing the way to Nankan -- but 'Nankan' is written with all letters the same height (i.e., the capital 'N' is reduced to the height of the letter 'a' and the 'k' is similarly shrunken)\" title=\"nankan_sign\" width=\"500\" height=\"533\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2011\/04\/nankan_sign.jpg 500w, https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2011\/04\/nankan_sign-281x300.jpg 281w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The sign in the photo below has been up for years; but only recently did I finally get a chance to take a halfway decent photo of it.
