So for now I&#8217;d like to draw everyone&#8217;s attention to two recent posts elsewhere: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Victor Mair, whose piece on the <a href=\"\/chinese\/crisis.html\">crisis\/opportunity myth<\/a> is one of the most popular readings on Pinyin Info, has a guest post at Language Log titled <a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/003184.html\">On Learning Mandarin in America<\/a>. It&#8217;s full of good sense on the most effective way for foreigners to study Mandarin as a foreign language.<\/li>\n<li>And Languagehat has a wonderful discussion titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.languagehat.com\/archives\/002386.php\">The Chinese Written Character as a Medium for Balderdash<\/a>. One representative line: &#8220;Chinese readers are not &#8216;gazing into both pictorial and conceptual space,&#8217; they&#8217;re reading, just like anybody else.&#8221; <em>Amen<\/em>! Recommended reading in conjunction with this: <a href=\"\/readings\/texts\/ezra_pound_chinese.html\">Fenollosa, Pound and the Chinese Character<\/a>, an essay from 1958 by George A.
