This promises to be a tremendously exciting event, with select scholars from throughout the United States, Asia, and Oceania participating. I&#8217;ll have more to say about this after the gathering.  <\/p>\n<p>While I&#8217;m in Hawaii I may drop in on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asian-studies.org\/Conference\/index.htm\">joint conference of the Association for Asian Studies and the International Convention of Asia Scholars<\/a> (March 31\u2013April 3). You might think, though, that with nearly 800 sessions on just about everything under the sun, at least a few of them would discuss romanization. (But <em>nooo<\/em>.) Still, session 282, &#8220;Beyond Cultural Essentialism: Neo-Orientalism in Chinese Studies&#8221; (Friday morning, 10:15-12:15), sounds interesting, especially Edward McDonald&#8217;s talk on <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.cambridge.org\/action\/displayAbstract?aid=6631928\">character fetishization in Chinese studies<\/a>. McDonald&#8217;s new book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26keywords%3D%2526%252334%253BLearning%2520Chinese%252C%2520Turning%2520Chinese%253A%2520Challenges%2520to%2520Becoming%2520Sinophone%2520in%2520a%2520Globalised%2520World%2526%252334%253B%26tag%3Dopera-20%26index%3Dblended%26link_code%3Dqs&#038;tag=pininf-20&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957\"><em>Learning Chinese, Turning Chinese: Challenges to Becoming Sinophone in a Globalised World<\/em><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=pininf-20&#038;l=ur2&#038;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>, also covers this topic. <\/p>\n<p>If you know of anything else particularly interesting going on at the AAS-ICAS conference or in Honolulu at large, please let me know.
