{"id":3583,"date":"2010-08-04T14:18:10","date_gmt":"2010-08-04T06:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/?p=3583"},"modified":"2018-08-28T12:19:53","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T04:19:53","slug":"history-bite-around-this-time-in-1977","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/2010\/history-bite-around-this-time-in-1977\/","title":{"rendered":"history bite: around this time in 1977"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty-three years ago the third <a href=\"http:\/\/unstats.un.org\/unsd\/geoinfo\/uncsgnreports.htm\">United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names<\/a> voted  43-1 in favor of adopting Hanyu Pinyin as &#8220;the international system for the romanization of Chinese geographical names,&#8221; which was a major step in establishing the use of Hanyu Pinyin internationally. <\/p>\n<p>The one nay vote came from the United States, which said that changing the Library of Congress&#8217;s records from Wade-Giles to Pinyin would be prohibitively expensive. (The Library of Congress did not begin its Pinyin-conversion project until twenty years later.)
