{"id":2688,"date":"2009-07-18T12:16:02","date_gmt":"2009-07-18T04:16:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/?p=2688"},"modified":"2018-08-27T17:32:22","modified_gmt":"2018-08-27T09:32:22","slug":"intercapitalization-the-beijing-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/2009\/intercapitalization-the-beijing-trip\/","title":{"rendered":"InTerCaPiTaLiZaTion: the Beijing trip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To my relief, I saw very little in the way of the orthography-killing cancer that is InTerCaPiTaLiZaTion while I was in Beijing. <\/p>\n<p>The worst offender I spotted was the cover to <span class=\"py\">Q&#464;y&#232; y&#468; x&#237;ngzh&#232;ng j&#299;gu&#257;n ch&#225;ngji&#224;n y&#236;ngy&#242;ngw&#233;n xi&#283;zu&#242; d&#224;qu&#225;n<\/span> (&#20225;&#19994;&#19982;&#34892;&#25919;&#26426;&#20851;&#24120;&#35265;&#24212;&#29992;&#25991;&#20889;&#20316;&#22823;&#20840; \/ &#20225;&#26989;&#33287;&#34892;&#25919;&#27231;&#38364;&#24120;&#35211;&#25033;&#29992;&#25991;&#23531;&#20316;&#22823;&#20840;), which to me just screams out &#8220;UGly NightMare&#8221;. But at least the word parsing is right, which is more than can be said for many uses of Pinyin in China. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2009\/07\/intercapped_book_title.jpg\" alt=\"intercapped_book_title\" title=\"intercapped_book_title\" width=\"400\" height=\"555\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2009\/07\/intercapped_book_title.jpg 400w, https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2009\/07\/intercapped_book_title-216x300.jpg 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note that the image is flipped:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2009\/07\/flipped_book_title.jpg\" alt=\"detail from the above photo, showing how the title on a book spine is mirrored\" title=\"flipped_book_title\" width=\"254\" height=\"174\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2687\"\/><\/p>\n<p>More troubling, because it is on official signage, is the use of intercaps on some station guides above the doors of subway cars.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2009\/07\/BeiJing_line5.jpg\" alt=\"Route Map Of Bei Jing Subway Line 5\" title=\"BeiJing_line5\" width=\"500\" height=\"291\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2009\/07\/BeiJing_line5.jpg 500w, https:\/\/pinyin.info\/news\/news_photos\/2009\/07\/BeiJing_line5-300x174.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\nThe capitalization of &#8220;Of&#8221; demonstrates that the bro-ken and InTerCaPiTaLized &#8220;Bei Jing&#8221; is probably due more to standard sloppiness than design.
