Zhou Youguang on 50th anniversary of simplified characters, etc.

Here’s the text of a speech by Zhou Youguang on the fiftieth anniversaries (but not to the day) of the scheme for “simplifying” Chinese characters and of the national directive on the popularization of Mandarin. I don’t share his enthusiasm for these. But, given his vital and clear-sighted work on Hanyu Pinyin, I’d be happy to publicize his views on just about anything.

And the fact that he’s still giving speeches at the age of 101 is nothing short of phenomenal.

  1. Mark,

I find it very exciting that you were able to come up with this pinyin text (complete with proper word division and tones) by using Wenlin, with some of your own ingenuity.

I hope that you make it as easy as possible for people who visit pinyin.info to learn how to do this for themselves.

    Best,

    Victor

  2. Hi Mark,

I like your site ???? h?n y?u yìsi – very interesting. I wonder if it’s possible to have not just 2 but 3 – 1) original Chinese, 2) Pinyin, 3) English. Long live “Pinyin News”!

Well, someone has to do the work. :) OK, I volunteer to translate one or two articles (not too difficult) and wait for other to add more, so we can help each other.

    Thanks,
    Anatoli

  3. Thanks, Anatoli!

It would be great to have more English translations here. However, as anyone who has ever corresponded with me knows, I’m a very slow writer. And, unfortunately, I’m an even slower translator. So having some help with this would be wonderful.

I’d also be interested in hearing what other ideas people have for making greater use of the energy and expertise of the many readers of this site.
